History

Sutorman is a typical Adriatic lugger, built in the shipyard Spužvar in Šibenik, Croatia, in 1951. It's a traditional wooden boat, which was used for shipping cargo between the Adriatic islands. The vessel type lugger is originally English; its structural design made it well-suited for fishing in the North Sea. The French originally used it for commercial purposes, and later in the Napoleonic wars also for military reconnaissance. Luggers were rare on the Adriatic - built in a handful of small shipyards. The tradition has only been preserved in a few; including some on the Slovenian coast.

The Sutorman had exchanged several owners before it came into the hands of a Slovene enamoured with Adriatic barks in 1984. It was completely restored with much patience and effort in the years 2000 – 2008 in the Sečovlje “škver”, i.e. a small traditional shipyard (Italian squero). The new look returned the Sutorman the splendour that reflects the beauty and elegance behind the construction of these magnificent boats. The choice materials embedded in this vessel reveal all the care and skill devoted to each exquisite detail.
